Hunt & Mitton Valve Company can trace its history back
to 1842 when Colonel James Hunt founded the business of
James Hunt & Company making valves for steam and hot
water. He was joined in 1874 by Mr. Thomas E. Mitton and
the business took the name it has today Hunt & Mitton
Company.
Throughout its history Hunt & Mitton has been at the
forefront of development in the UK valve industry and was a
founder member of the UK valve manufacturer's trade
association when it was formed in 1939.
Hunt & Mitton's first involvement in valves for
hazardous chemicals took place in the 1940's, nearly 70 years
ago. By 1950 through field trials and research they had
developed the Series 6775, a valve specifically designed for
this application. During the 1960's, when ICI made a huge
expansion in chlorine production, it was Hunt & Mitton who supplied all the chlorine service
valves.
Since then Hunt & Mitton has been a recognised and respected name in the supply of
valves for hazardous chemicals.
In the 1980's the company worked with ICI (now IneosChlor) to develop new and
improved designs for hazardous chemical service. These designs formed the basis of the
specifications that have been developed by Euro Chlor, the association of European Chlorine
producers. Today these specifications are used by the vast majority of international chemical
companies and are recognised as making a major contribution to plant and personnel safety
and environmental care.
Hunt & Mitton products have been supplied through out the world. In Hong Kong they
are the valve of choice for liquid chlorine used in the treatment of drinking and waste water
with 400 valves installed in 10 treatment facilities. Hunt & Mitton's packed gland and
bellows seal valves have been used for Chlorine (Cl ), HCl, Phosgene (COCl ), Hydrogen
Fluoride (HF) and EDC.
The founding in January 2010 of Hunt & Mitton Valve Company, Yancheng, China
opens a new chapter in the history of this successful company and brings its world class
product range into the world's largest market for hazardous chemical valves.
